This project centers on the design of a memorial and mortuary for Hart Island, New Yorks city memorial. It explores the intersection of architecture, memory, and ecology through three key themes: reconnection, regeneration, and storytelling.
The design process involved site analysis, conceptual development, material selection, and spatial planning. Using recycled materials such as bricks and timber from demolition sites, the project integrates sustainable practices while developing the structures with their own layered histories.
The mortuary, divided into functional and restorative spaces, demonstrates thoughtful programming and sensitivity to the needs of both the deceased and staff. The memorial, inspired by the fluidity of water, creates an evolving spatial experience, symbolizing the interconnectedness of life and death. Its design emphasizes inclusivity, inviting visitors to interpret and engage with the island’s legacy in personal ways.
